The genre characteristics of encyclopedic articles have remained outside the scope of literary studies until now, which confirms the relevance of the study of the typological status of articles in the Encyclopedia of Sciences, Arts, and Crafts by D. Diderot and J.-L. d’Alembert (hereinafter referred to as the Encyclopedia) which represents a system of literary genres within the Encyclohedia. The goal is to identify the characteristics of the educational travel essay presented in the Encyclopedia as an independent literary and documentary genre, combining features of literature and journalism. The research material is the article PARIS, written for Volume XI of the Encyclopedia by a French educator and encyclopedist Louis de Jaucourt. The analysis of the text and its key features is supported by structural and comparative historical approaches.
Encyclopedia by Diderot and D’Alembert; humanitarian geography; Louis de Jaucourt; PARIS article; literary documentary genre; poetics of the genre; educational travel essay.
