The article concerns archival materials testifying to the na-ture of Rainer Maria Rilke’s (1875–1926) correspondence with famous Vien-nese writers – participants of the literary circle “Young Vienna” – Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Arthur Schnitzler. It is shown that Rilke had great respect for both the Hofmannsthal family and the poetic symbolist work of almost his peer Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Rilke regularly introduced him to his published collections of poems. However, the Viennese poet’s attitude towards Rilke was not unambiguous. On the one hand, Hofmannsthal intuitively felt the innovative spirit of Rilke’s achievements as a symbolist, on the other, Hofmannsthal could not imagine what significant heights in poetry Rilke would achieve. Having full confidence in the writer of the older generation, Arthur Schnitzler, Rilke waited in vain for help from him during the difficult days of his short family life. Schnitzler did not respond to specific requests from Rilke and his friends, considering his patronage in solving life’s problems unnecessary. However, Schnitzler’s authority in literary matters was indisputable, and he expertly criticized Rilke’s early novels.
