This article explores a scholarly narrative that has, until recently, received scant attention from Bakhtin scholars. Through an analysis of M.M. Bakhtin’s marginalia in issues of the journal “Foreign Literature” dedicated to China, books from his personal library with inscriptions by orien-talists, and the responses of L.D. Pozdneeva and G.S. Pomerants to Bakhtin’s book on Rabelais, the authors conclude that the “Chinese theme” holds particular significance for reconstructing the scholarly biography of Bakhtin as a historian of culture who was free from Eurocentrism.
