Abstract

Acknowledgements: The research was supported by an internal grant of Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (project No. 54-VG). The subject of The Magician (2021), а novel about Thomas Mann’s life and work, written by an Irish writer Colm Tóibín, can be classified as a popular genre of biofiction (fictionalized biography). It combines factual and fictional material and demonstrates the close connection between the events of Mann’s life and his literary texts. The appeal to events in the world history and the history of the Mann’s family helps to create a multifaceted image of Mann (as son, husband, father, writer, German citizen, emigrant). An important aspect in the Thomas Mann’s studies is his attitude to Russian culture and literature expressed in his works, letters and essays, as well as in a number of episodes of his novel.
