In the 1920s, Soviet literary criticism engaged in an active debate on the fundamental principles of translating literary texts. Today, pioneering works by M. Alekseev, A. Fedorov, A. Smirnov, and others are well known. However, overshadowed by these figures were the theoretical contributions of poet, philologist, and translator Aleksandr Ilyich Romm (1898–1943), presented in a report at the State Academy of Artistic Sciences in the spring of 1925. Thanks to the writer’s extensive drafts and notes preserved in his archive, we can attempt to reconstruct his original perspective on the problem of literary translation, which, in many ways, foreshadowed the achievements of 20 th century Russian and Western translation studies.
