The article examines the genesis and formation of Gothic literature in Portugal in the first half of the 19 th century: it observes the literary path from “cemetery poetry” of the late 18 th century to the romantic poem and ballad; it traces the evolution of individual plots and motifs inherent in Iberian folklore, and their transformation in romantic poetry, drama, and prose; it reveals the role of the translation activities of Portuguese romanticists in the development of European Gothic, as well as touches upon the problem of literary influences. Using the example of the plot and motives associated with breaking a vow, the article demonstrates how Gothic poetics is gradually becoming more complex and the range of aspects is expanding in the works of such pre-eminent Portuguese writers as Alexandre Herculano (“Dame with the Goat’s Foot”) and J.B. Almeida Garrett (drama “Frei Luis de Sousa”).
