Even at the beginning of the romantic era, Potoсky outlined what would be one way or another significant for Pushkin and Gogol: the reception of the Gothic, a hypermultiple storyteller system, the pathos of subjectivity, literariness, genre dimension of novellism. Certain elements of the Gothic reception – not only in connection with Potocky – are noticeable in Pushkins’ Boris Godunov, Poltava, Shot, The Queen of Spades, etc., as well as in Vii and other works of Gogol. Gothic elements appear through crosscutting motifs temptation, salvation of the soul, as well as various mysterious adventures of a spiritual and ethical nature. The witch’s tavern in Potocky’s novel is a harbinger of the estate of the witch from Vii. The heroes of Potocky and Gogol become victims of the devil’s temptation, although one cannot be completely sure of its reality. In terms of genre, the novelistic dimension prevails in these texts, suggesting an accentuated use of the potential of the short story in its various modifications. Gogol is closer to the Cervantes version of the Renaissance short story, akin to the metaphysical parable. Potocky is closer to various versions of the Renaissance short story as a whole.
Gothic; novellism; storyteller system; pathos of subjectivity; devil’s temptation; salvation of the soul.
