The article defines the influence of classical Gothic drama, in particular the C.R. Maturin’s tragedy “Bertram or the castle of St. Aldobrand” (1816) on the phenomenon of the Gothic novel. The article considers domestic and foreign studies devoted to classic Gothic novels of the 18–19 th centuries, the work of Maturin, as well as the relationship between drama and prose in the Gothic literature of 18–19 th centuries. The article reveals continuity of the work of writers of different periods and kinds of literature, the mutual influence of drama and epic literature of this epoch related to the Gothic tradition.
