The article analyses Zhukovsky’s translation of one of Goethe’s most famous poems, made by him for the collection “Für Wenige. For the few”. The poetic and ideological systems of Goethe and Zhukovsky, reflected in these poems, are compared. It is noted that, although they are largely close, Zhukovsky’s translation reflects a less developed system of Russian poetry at a given point in its evolution. As a result, Zhukovsky failed to convey some elements of Goethe’s natural philosophy. Nevertheless, thinking in symbols, born from the complicated instability of Goethe’s metaphors, turned out to be subjectively close to him and became the poetic basis of his own most important poems.
lyrics; V.A. Zhukovsky; J.W. Goethe; poetics of romanticism; natural philosophy; “landscape of the soul”; the cult of friendship.
