The article deals with the specific of interaction of fiction and reality in the writings of German romantics as a commentary to A.V. Mikhailov’s works on stylistic variety of this period of literary history. The analysis is accompanied by additional observations on the works of Jean Paul and Zolger which are separated in a decade but in a whole represent an aesthetic shift predates realism of the 19th century with its irony that displaces romantic irony. The specific role of national aesthetic tradition for German writer is compared by Mikhailov with the synchronous literary situation in other European countries. Conclusions drawn suggest a new reading of the main works of German romanticism which analysis gives explanation to the specific of reality in the subsequent German literature up to the First Would war.
