The article discusses the poetics of metaphor in the lyrics
by A.A. Fet. It is shown that the peculiarity of the metaphor is associated with a number of features. Firstly, this is a rejection of its motivation by the visual or acoustic properties of the object or a «masking» of such motivation.
Secondly, it is a combination of metaphor and metonymy. Thirdly, this is the two-layer nature of the metaphor, when one metaphor contained in the subtext is the basis for a metaphor that is explicitly expressed in the text. Fourth, this is the construction of a metaphor based on not the basic meanings of words, but on their connotations.
