The paper briefly describes key Trecento commentaries on Dante's Commedia and examines several fundamental poetological concepts of the period, namely: which texts were actually considered poetical at the time; poetry as a fame-seeking endeavour; and how poetry correlates with rhetorics, philosophy, and theology.
