This article is a detailed comment to the letter of Yu. N. Bartenev to Metropolitan Filaret, published by N.V. Sushkov in his work “Zapiski o Zhizni i Vremeni Svyatitelya Filareta”. The text of the letter in this book does not come with the necessary context, so we read it in conjunction with the preserved but unpublished correspondence between Sushkov and Bartenev. Based on this correspondence, we publish four letters relevant to our interest in “the letter from an elder to an elder about an elder” (as Bartenev’s letter was titled in Sushkov’s book). This small historicalliterary case, which may at first seem “closed”, actually has a lot of contexts that can be used to complement the current biographies of two correspondents (Sushkov and Bartenev) and Metropolitan Filaret.
