The article examines the texts of E.T.A. Hoffmann (“The Extraordinary Sufferings of the Theater Director”), N.V. Gogol (“Theatrical Departure after the Performance of a New Comedy”), and Apollon Grigoriev (theater criticism) from a metapoetic perspective. All these authors insist on the need for credibility and thruthfulness in art. And Hoffmann and Gogol emphasize the category of the comic. Gogol’s “Theatrical Departure”, like Hoffmann’s “Extraordinary Sufferings”, is related to late Romanticism. In this regard, it is worth noting that Gogol in “Theatrical Departure” replaces the early Romantic idea of art as a struggle against life with the late Romantic idea of art as reconciliation with life. Furthermore, the inherent in all tree authors cult of the author-creator is generally Romantic.
E.T.A. Hoffmann; N.V. Gogol; Apollon Grigoriev; metapoetics; romanticism; cult of the author-creator.
