THE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL MODE IN GOETHE’S WRITING

Abstract

Goethe’s autobiographical writings mark a new stage in his creative development, offering a direct response to the dualities that de-fined the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century (particularly its first decades). The heightened relevance of the autobiographical genre during this period stems from the creative individual’s reaction to the incomplete and ultimately unsatisfactory realization of Enlightenment ideals. The paper also considers the extent to which this period may be legitimately described as the “Goethe era”, despite the flourishing of Romantic aesthetics, which placed strong emphasis on authorial self-analysis. While Goethe’s late works display a certain affinity with Romanticism, their content reaches beyond what was typical for Romantic writers, achieving a depth that distinguishes them from the movement’s characteristic tendencies.

Keywords
