The article examines an unknown fact of literary life of Moscow in 1866. The fact is the visit of the American poetess Ellen Lloyd (Key) Blunt to Russia. The biography of E.L. Blunt, whose name is now almost forgotten, introduces us to a number of cultural and political contexts of her time. Besides, her previously unpublished poems point-by-point reveal the historical events and processes of the era. Prince V.F. Odoevsky showed interest in the talent and personality of E.L. Blunt. His interest was reflected in active actions, in particular in the organization of her declamation, held in Moscow on June 25, 1866. Odoevsky’s attention is multifaceted: it is both an aesthetic and a political passion that characterizes Odoevsky both as a writer and a senator. Thus, the prince’s association with the American poetess, which was accidental and brief, can serve as a small but valuable addition to the established image of Odoevsky as a thinker.
