The author of the article analyses for the first time, from the point of view of applying the principle of historicism, M.P. Pogodin’s “Memories of Prince Vladimir Fedorovich Odoevsky” (1869) as one of the first biographies of Odoevsky. From M.P. Pogodin’s memoirs we know how his friendship with Odoevsky, with whom they graduated from Moscow University in the same year, influenced his work, as well as details of Odoevsky’s biography and creative path. These memoirs serve as an important document for the study of the scientific and creative heritage of both authors. Pogodin’s diary and correspondence with Odoevsky, in which he mentions his meetings with Pogodin, as well as Odoevsky’s article on Russian music (“Russian and so-called common music”), written for Pogodin’s newspaper “Russky” and published in 1867, also served as material for the article. In his memoirs, Pogodin outlines the range of Odoevsky’s scientific and creative interests, shows him as a universal personality, in the best traditions of scientific and artistic salons of the Romantic era.
