“…TO RELATING THE ART AND LIFE IN HIS OWN STYLE”: S.P. SHEVYREV’S ASSESSMENT OF THE STYLE OF PRINCE V.F. ODOEVSKY

Abstract

The article is devoted to a detailed analysis of the complex of reasons for the radical evolution of the literary-critical concept of S.P. Shevyrev in relation to the artistic prose of Prince V.F. Odoevsky of the 1830 s – 1840 s, which was initially perceived with enthusiasm as a striking example of virtuoso creative writing, and then persistently interpreted as an unfortunate manifestation of the decline of former mastery. Using specific examples, involving not only the texts of critical articles, but also private epistolary materials, it is shown that the prevailing negative assessments were based primarily on factors of an ideological rather than an aesthetic nature, which caused a fundamental revision of the original evaluative judgments.
