L.A. Malyughin does not belong to the classics of Russian Chekhovian studies. However, articles and books by L.A. Malyughin, devoted to Chekhov’s work, are a curious object for research analysis. All these works can be divided into three groups: texts in which the personality and work of A.P. Chekhov are sources for any examples; fictions; research articles and reviews. L.A. Malyughin used an examples from Chekhov’s works during discussions on topics relevant to Soviet literature and theater. Fictions (play, screenplay and story) are attempts of reconstruction of Chekhov’s biography and its episodes. Almost all L.A. Malyughin’s scientific or popular science articles are characterized by an obligatory polemical component: L.A. Malyughin offers original point of views on Chekhov’s dramaturgy, he argues with representatives of the “official” Chekhovian scholars. An interesting source is the dissertation “Chekhov and the Soviet Theater”. In this dissertation L.A. Malyughin analyzes many theatrical interpretations of Chekhov’s work on the Soviet stage in the 1930–1940s. In general, L.A. Malyughin’s works on Chekhov’s heritage and biography can complement the image of the history of Soviet Chekhovian studies in the 1930–1960s.
