The article is about Mikhail Bakhtin’s book “Problems of Dostoyevsky’s Creation” (1929) as reflected in Lev Pumpyansky’s remarks on this book, and also in connection with Pumpyansky’s own book “Dostoyevsky and Antiquity” (1922). Bakhtin’s 1929 book which was republished in 1963 under the title “Problems of Dostoyevsky’s Poetics”, with its considerable amendments and additions, seems to be extremely complicated by its thought and many layers of its insights, due to its origin as well as the time of its publication. All the attempts, even most meticulous ones, to show up clearly the initial conception of Bakhtin’s book on Dostoyevsky written at the beginning of the 1920s and pushed back from Bakhtin’s most intimate predecessors – Vyach. Ivanov and Bakhtin’s friend Lev Pumpyansky – seem to be only preliminary. Pumpyansky’s remarks in his copy of Bakhtin’s 1929 book, as well as some statements in Boris Engelgardt’s article about Dostoyevsky’ ideological novel (highly praised by Bakhtin), might help us to provide a more adequate understanding of Bakhtin’s work.
