Abstract

The article proves the validity of the hypothesis of N.S. Demkova that The Tale of Igor’s Campaign was written in 1194–1196. It is specified that, most likely, the monument was written in the spring of 1196. The appeals in the monument are analyzed, and an attempt is made to understand when they were relevant. It is proved that the call to the princes to avenge the defeat of Igor and to protect the Russian land from Khan Konchak and other Polovtsians does not belong to the Author, but to the hero of the work. It follows that the call was relevant during the events described in the work, and not at the time of its creation. At the same time, apparently, the main goal of the Author was to convince the Russian princes to stop fighting with each other. This was especially true in the spring of 1196, when after several years of relative peace in Rus’ a new civil strife began, in which almost all the principalities of Ancient Rus’ took part. Probably, the Author, creating his work, tried to stop this war. Quotes from the monument are given, which may indicate that it was created in the spring of 1196.
