The main aspects of the European literature during the first third of the 19 th century discussed in the paper are as follows: comprehension of the ambiguity of the phenomena and psychological logic of the development resulting in the leading role of the novel genre (based on German and partially Russian material). Special attention is given to the stage described by Heinrich Heine as Kunstperiode. The paper discusses the focus on personality – its emergence during the Romantic period, replacement by the focus on class status in the works of realism and the strengthening of the individuality in the light of dialectics from the beginning through the middle of the 19 th century.
