The article analyzes the contribution of M.P. Pogodin and S.P. Shevyrev to Russian literary criticism. In particular it is said about the formation of a comparative model in the works of both scientists, that will be later developed by A.N. Veselovsky, F.I. Buslaev, etc. The article deals with the question how the comparative historical method was formed in the articles of M.P. Pogodin, and then was further developed by S.P. Shevyrev who compared different cultural and historical phenomena. It is argued that already in 1831 by expressing the idea of the historical method S.P. Shevyrev anticipated A.N. Veselovsky, who later picked up this idea.
