«Doctor Zhivago» with English accent

Krasavchenko T.N.

Abstract

Boris Pasternak is well-known in the English-speaking world first of all as an author of «Doctor Zhivago» – thanks to the literary translations by Max Hayward and Manya Harari in 1958, by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky in 2010, by Nicolas Pasternak Slater in 2019 and screen-versions in the USA (1965) and Great Britain (2002). As a paradox of intercultural communication is interpreted the case of «Davie–Pasternak»: As a poet of a different language, cultural code, epoch Pasternak played an important part in the poetic evolution of a famous English poet Donald Davie, who translated poems of «Doctor Zhivago». Film versions of the novel show that it is very difficult to transfer Pasternak’s novel into the film language, it resists the simplified cinematography approaches.
